Fox-Driven Outrage Over ASU Professor’s Course on ‘Whiteness’ Drew Threats, Neo-Nazi Activists

Posted in Extremist Propaganda, Neo-Nazi by David Neiwert on May 11, 2015 - 10:19 am

English professor Lee Bebout intended to be thought-provoking when he offered a course at Arizona State University (ASU) titled “Race Theory and the Problem of Whiteness.” He had no idea that it would also provoke the wrath of, first, Fox News viewers, and then, white supremacists, sparking protests on campus, and yet ultimately drawing the explicit support of ASU administrators.

English professor Lee Bebout

But that’s what happened after Bebout listed the course for ASU’s spring semester. Now, having survived a barrage of hate mail and protests, he can only say he’s relieved the ordeal appears to be over.

“I’ve been a lot less stressed lately,” he told Hatewatch. “There were moments of anxiety in the beginning of all this, but once I got support from folks, the anxiety subsided tremendously.”

The problem began a little while after the course was listed, when an ASU student named Lauren Clark wrote a blog post for Campus Reform, a right-wing organization founded by David Horowitz and Morton Blackwell’s Leadership Institute. The institute is devoted to policing American campuses for “the conduct and misconduct of university administrators, faculty, and students.”

The next day, Clark appeared on Fox News with host Elisabeth Hasselbeck to attack Bebout’s course in more explicit terms.

Clark and Hasselbeck listed the texts — which included such titles as The Possessive Investment in Whiteness, Critical Race Theory, Everyday Language of White Racism, Playing in the Dark, and The Alchemy of Race and Rights — and Clark said they suggested a trend: “All of these books have a disturbing trend and that’s pointing to white people as a root cause of social injustices for this country.”

“Clearly we have a lot of work to go, as a society, in terms of racial tension,” Clark continued. “But having a class that suggests an entire race is the problem is inappropriate, wrong, and, frankly, counterproductive. I wonder what students like myself are taking out of this course when they learn all about all this negative racial tension out in society. There’s a lot of negative implications here.”

In reality, the course is a fairly standard academic study of race in modern society. As ASU administrators explained at the time the controversy erupted: “This course uses literature and rhetoric to look at how stories shape people’s understandings and experiences of race. It encourages students to examine how people talk about – or avoid talking about – race in the contemporary United States. This is an interdisciplinary course, so students will draw on history, literature, speeches and cultural changes – from scholarly texts to humor. The class is designed to empower students to confront the difficult and often thorny issues that surround us today and reach thoughtful conclusions rather than display gut reactions. A university is an academic environment where we discuss and debate a wide array of viewpoints.”

Within hours of the segment having aired, Bebout and ASU were barraged with hate mail from around the country. Some of the messages included threats; one of special note contained a cryptic religious message suggesting the professor deserved to be murdered.

But that was just the beginning. A short time later, members of a neo-Nazi youth organization called the National Youth Front (NYF), a youth-oriented arm of the white nationalist organization American Freedom Party, began plastering the ASU campus with fliers featuring Bebout’s portrait and the stark label “Anti-White.” They also went to Bebout’s neighborhood and distributed them there.

An NYF spokesman, Angelo John Gage, told Talking Points Memo that their “Operation Bad Teacher” program targeted Bebout because his course was “racist.” (Gage himself has a long history of racism and anti-Semitism, including stints on The White Voice, a white nationalist website, and Stormfront.) He also claimed none of his members had threatened Bebout.

“No longer will we have our identity destroyed and our people defamed,” declared NYF’s website. “This week, several of National Youth Front’s members went to ASU to raise awareness that we will no longer tolerate this antiwhite agenda. Over four hundred fliers were delivered over several days to both Lee Bebout’s neighborhood and ASU.” A local NYF member who called himself “John Hess” admitted to being the person seen in a video promoting the campaign.

Early in March, when ASU students organized a protest in support of the embattled professor Bebout’s course, as well as the work of an associate professor at the school named Robert Poe, “Hess” and a cadre of like-minded right-wing extremists showed up on the ASU campus to counter-protest. While Bebout maintained a low profile throughout the ordeal, Poe went out and confronted his antagonists face to face. ( continue to full post… )

League of the South Chieftain Talks ‘Race War’

Posted in Anti-Black, Extremist Propaganda, Nativist Extremist by Keegan Hankes on May 8, 2015 - 9:04 am

The League of the South (LOS) appears to be having an identity crisis. As the two-year anniversary of the neo-Confederate hate group’s abrupt tactical shift towards well-dressed and well-mannered street demonstrations approaches, LOS President Michael Hill’s latest column marks one more chapter in the collapse of what quickly revealed itself to be a laughably transparent façade of respectability.

The time has come, at least in Hill’s mind, to ponder what he believes is the real possibility of a race war. Apparently, he likes his odds.

LOS President Michael Hill

LOS President Michael Hill

“We Southern nationalists do not want a race war (or any sort of war). But if one is forced on us, we’ll participate,” wrote Hill on the LOS website. “Southern whites are geared up and armed to the teeth.”

Such statements may come as a shock, given the fact that the LOS has spent much of the last two years attempting to promote its message to “regular” southerners through the use of mainstream, conservative messaging on issues such as “traditional marriage” and the “demographic displacement of southerners.” Of course, that was never a very honest presentation. After all, Hill is the same man who at a Georgia LOS meeting in 2011 urged his constituents to begin stocking up on AK-47s, hollow-point bullets, and, most remarkably, tools to derail trains.

Then, last year, Hatewatch revealed that the LOS was actively — and secretly — training a uniformed, paramilitary unit to be called the ‘Indomitables’ that was tasked with advancing a second southern secession.

Hill’s latest piece, which appeared in the wake of nearly a week of demonstrations and rioting in the Baltimore area following the death of Freddie Gray in police custody, focuses on the myriad advantages of the angry white man in a potential race war. The reason, asserts Hill, is the white man’s innate superiority.

“Negroes are more impulsive than whites,” says Hill, who once taught at a historically black university in Alabama. “Tenacity and organization are not the negroes [sic] strong suits. If the war could be won by ferocity alone, he might have a chance. But like the adrenaline rush that sparks it, ferocity is short lived. And it can be countered by cool discipline, an historic white trait, and all that stems from it.”

The race war Hill imagines is nothing more than fear-mongering in the style of the late neo-Nazi William Pierce’s novel The Turner Diaries. That book depicted a race war in which whites murder Jews, black people, “race-mixers” and a host of others in order to build an “Aryan” state. Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was carrying photocopied pages from the dystopian novel when he was arrested, apparently to explain his motives in case he were to be killed by police.

Hill seems to revel in the details of the bloodshed he thinks may be imminent.

“Things would begin to get interesting once the widespread terror spread out to the suburbs,” he writes in his new essay. “The most likely flashpoints would be white owned suburban businesses or neighborhoods where armed men and women stood ready to defend themselves. At this point white discipline, resources, and firepower would start to become a factor; however, would American suburbanites, after decades of PC brainwashing, have the will to fight back in sufficient number to quell the black tide?”

Hill also throws in a little of his increasingly apparent anti-Semitism. Following his recent posting of an essay by the disgraced former professor and anti-Semitic ideologue Kevin MacDonald in a LOS Facebook group, Hill now suggests that one of the South’s main problems is “Jewry” and what he depicts as the Jewish-controlled media. “ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, and other largely Jewish-Progressive owned media would doubtless fan the flames, justifying black behavior while conversely condemning white reaction,” Hill writes as he contemplates the difficulties that will face the white man.

Hill goes on to fantasize about the end of “white guilt,” a common theme among neo-Nazis and others on the radical right. “American negroes, and those Jew/Gentile Progressives who supported their lawless behavior for decades, would have used up whatever ‘civil rights’ capital they may have accumulated with average white Americans (and perhaps many Asians and Hispanics),” he writes as he describes what is pictured as the ultimate victory of whites in the South.

When reached by telephone, Hill declined to comment.

Hill ends his essay with a warning that sounds very much like a threat: “So if negroes think a ‘race war’ in modern America would be to their advantage, they had better prepare themselves for a very rude awakening. White people may be patient, but our patience does have a limit. You do not want to test that limit.”

New Report on Jeff Rense and His Rense Radio Network

Posted in Anti-Semitic, Extremist Propaganda by Heidi Beirich on April 27, 2015 - 2:01 pm

Today, the Southern Poverty Law Center released a report on the Rense Radio Network and its owner, Jeff Rense. Rense, whose network hosts radio shows by former Klansmen David Duke and Don Black, has become increasingly anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi. This ugly turn to preaching hate hit a milestone last Monday when Rense.com celebrated Adolf Hitler’s birthday by posting a laudatory paean to Hitler that praised the genocidal leader for “standing up to International Jewry.”

The SPLC’s report looks at Rense’s anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial, the extremist guests featured on his own radio program and the advertisers whose products make Rense Radio Network possible. It is accompanied by a selection of audio excerpts from Rense’s own radio program that document the program’s anti-Semitism and extremism.

Jeff Rense: In His Own Words

Posted in Anti-Semitic, Extremist Propaganda, Uncategorized by Heidi Beirich on April 27, 2015 - 1:50 pm

Jeff Rense, owner of the Rense Radio Network, hosts radio programs by well known racists and anti-Semites, including former Klansmen Don Black and David Duke. But Rense is not just the CEO of a hate radio empire, but a fellow ideological traveler and a self-professed friend of many extremists. He frequently hosts anti-Semites and Holocaust deniers on his own radio show, often endorsing their opinions.

Interview on April 9, 2015, with former Klansman and raging anti-Semite David Duke, who has his own radio show on the Rense News Network:

Jeff Rense regarding his relationship to David Duke: “I wanna bring on at this hour a very good friend of mine for a long time. Without question all of you know his name. Many of you fortunately know of his brave and valiant work. He is one of the great patriots in the history of this country. For all peoples, ALL peoples.”

Jeff Rense praising Duke’s anti-Semitic propaganda: “[Your videos] are without question the most brilliantly conceived and executed videos I have ever some across exposing the truth of Zionism as racism and the tribal effort to continue to subjugate and crush the western world and if you talk about ISIS, don’t forget, Zionism is right in the midst of the construct called ISISm or ISIS and they are trying to eradicate all remnants, all forms, all remnants of Christianity from Iraq, just for starters.”

Duke on Israeli support of ISIS: “Israel has supported the ISIS movement, has supported even al Qaeda and I don’t know of any better and more powerful truth that Americans no longer control America but these Jewish extremists, these Zionists control America…”

Interview on May 13, 2010, with Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel, the first radio interview Zundel gave after his release on March 1, 2010 from a German prison where he served nearly three years for contravening Germany’s hate speech laws against inciting racial hatred.

Jeff Rense described Zundel as his “his friend” and “the world’s most famous political prisoner.” He also said Zundel is “a true visionary and an amazing journalist” and that Zundel sent him letters as well as watercolor paintings from prison.

Rense stated, “The letters that you sent me are very much treasured and the littler watercolors as well, and I want to thank you for that.”

On the show, Zundel proclaimed, “I knew that I was innocent.”

Rense agreed: “You were innocent, you are innocent, you always will be innocent. This was beyond an outrage.”

Interview on Jan. 16, 2015, with Harry Cooper, owner of Sharkhunters International, a travel outfit that takes neo-Nazis and others on celebratory trips to visit Nazi sites, and David Dees, an anti-Semitic illustrator whose “art” is frequently featured on rense.com. Dees most recent notable piece was a graphic paean to Hitler on rense.com that wished the genocidal leader of the Nazi party a “Happy Birthday” on April 20, 2015. Cooper is a regular guest on Rense the third Friday of every month and Rense serves on the Sharkhunters board according to Cooper.

Rense minimizing the Holocaust: “It’s a very, very sad story of massive brainwashing that has gone on for 60 years plus, and it’s not going to change. They’re teaching Holocaust history now in primary schools around the United States and in Europe and it’s only going to continue to get worse. No one defends the Holocaust, whatever it really was. No one defends picking up hundreds of thousands of people, maybe a couple of million, putting them in work camps, otherwise displacing them, taking their possessions, that’s not okay. That doesn’t work for me, but to lie about something and then capitalize on it and make trillions of dollars on it ultimately, doesn’t work for me either. Now somewhere in between there is the truth and it’s up to you to try and figure that out.”

Dees denying the Holocaust: “Also during the war, you know, they, the Americans and the Brits also flew over looking for any…also they bombed Germany back into the Stone Age. They dropped 75-100 percent more bombs on Germany than Germany was able to drop on England. But they also flew over Germany and took these incredible photographs, detailed photographs looking for targets and they were well aware of the concentration camps and all these photographs, there’s not a single one that has anything to do with mass graves. There were no mass graves, there was nothing that would give you evidence that any bodies were being burned, there was no people lined up and they had all these photographs and they never talk about the fact that there’s not one single photograph or any evidence of a Holocaust of a gas chamber that was being used to destroy people.”

Rense minimizing the Holocaust: “Yes, there were dead bodies in the camps, I must say David, but they died of typhus and starvation. Many of the other bodies shown as ‘allegedly Jews’ are actually Germans immolated in Dresden for example, piles and piles of bodies its just…you gotta hand it to them, they’re very cleaver.”

Interview on April 15, 2013, with anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist Texe Marrs, who is a guest on Rense’s show the third Monday of each month.

Marrs on Jewish people: “The Jews cannot administer a country, they don’t know how to run a country, all they are, well they’re just plain, well, you know, they’re parasites. They can get into a country and take over its financial system, and use the propaganda organs of a country, but they really don’t know how to administer for the good of the people. They cannot even administer the economy in the nation of Israel today.”

Rense agrees: “It’s greed. And lust for self, that’s what it is.”

Satellite Feed Drops Stormfront and David Duke Radio

Posted in Anti-Semitic, Extremist Propaganda, Holocaust Denial by Heidi Beirich on April 10, 2015 - 9:59 am

This past Thursday, both “Stormfront Radio” and neo-Nazi David Duke’s radio program were dropped by their satellite provider. toplogoOn his radio broadcast yesterday, former Klan leader Don Black, the host of “Stormfront Radio,” confirmed that his satellite access had been cancelled and blamed that cancellation on “Jewish supremacists.”

The cancellation comes in the wake of a major Southern Poverty Law Center exposé of “Stormfront Radio,” which documented the program’s extensive anti-Semitism and racism. The SPLC’s report also revealed that the show was being streamed into Europe via a French-owned satellite, Hot Bird 13A. That satellite is owned by Eutelsat, a Paris-based corporation.

The SPLC contacted Eutelsat to ask them whether their broadcast of hate radio into Europe might not violate various European countries’ hate speech laws. The company told SPLC that it was investigating and, soon after, the satellite contract was apparently dropped.

The American company that worked as the middleman (or reseller) with Eutelsat to put Don Black’s material onto the Hot Bird is Global Star Radio Network (GSR), based in Orrtanna, Pa., and owned by Todd Waite. As of today, GSR’s website is no longer showing Stormfront Radio or David Duke’s show as part of its programming, though both shows were listed yesterday. In addition, Hot Bird 13A is no longer advertised as one of GSR’s satellites. When called, Todd Waite refused to comment on the record about what exactly had happened.

Though Waite has apparently let Black and Duke go, he has not dropped Jeff Rense’s program. Both Black and Duke’s shows are part of the Rense Radio Network and their archives are stored there as of today (formerly they were on GSR). Rense has frequently interviewed anti-Semites on his program including both Black and Duke and Holocaust deniers Ernst Zundel and Texe Marrs. On air yesterday, Black said he had the “complete support of Jeff Rense.”

GSR continues to run radical right programming, but apparently no longer in Europe because it lost the Hot Bird and now only has Galaxy 19, which is owned by Intelsat, a company based in Luxembourg. Besides Rense, other GSR programming includes Scriptures for America, the racist ministry of now deceased Christian Identity preacher Pete Peters, and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ program. Luxembourg has laws against Holocaust denial, but is unclear if they apply to materials broadcast on Galaxy 19 into North America.

Salem Radio Network Horrified Its News Feed Runs on Stormfront Radio

Posted in Anti-Semitic, Extremist Propaganda, White Nationalism by Heidi Beirich on April 1, 2015 - 3:32 pm

Last week, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) released a report on “Stormfront Radio,” a racist and anti-Semitic broadcast that can be heard in the United States and on a satellite feed in Europe. Aired by the anti-Semitic Rense Radio Network, the two-hour show is hosted by Stormfront founder Don Black, a longtime white supremacist, and features a host of his likeminded racist allies.

Each hour of the show starts with a two-minute news broadcast, usually read by Bob Agnew of Salem Radio Network (SRN). The news segment, which provides an unearned air of legitimacy to Don Black’s hate-filled broadcasts, is produced by Salem Media Group, one of the largest and most successful Christian-based radio content providers in the country. Black has said SRN’s news makes his program sound “like a real radio show.”

But there’s a problem for Black. And Jeff Rense, who runs Rense Radio Network. SRN has not sanctioned them to run their programming.

Tom Tradup, SRN’s vice president of news and talk programming, is very upset with the situation. Tradup said in a voicemail left with the SPLC that the network knew “nothing” about this and “had not given them permission” to run the news feed. Tradup told the SPLC that Stormfront “kidnapped our news” and “we want nothing to do with them.” According to Tradup, the issue has been referred to SRN’s legal department, which plans to address the matter with the Rense Radio Network.

The use of SRN news on Stormfront radio is all the more abhorrent because Black’s program has viciously attacked SRN syndicated talk show host Michael Medved. Don Advo, who often co-hosts on “Stormfront Radio,” once accused Medved on air of being a racist Jew who was pro-choice to “cull the goyim herd” of white babies.

Attempts to contact Don Black and Jeff Rense were not responded to.

Robert Whitaker Of ‘Mantra’ Fame Announced As AFP Vice Presidential Candidate

The Mantra. (Source: www.whitakeronline.org)

The Mantra. (Source: www.whitakeronline.org)

The American Freedom Party (AFP) has a ticket for the 2016 presidential election. And its message is The Mantra.

Kenn Gividen of Indiana, a former Libertarian candidate for governor of Indiana in 2004, will run for president, while Robert Whitaker, an aging segregationist with a history of drug abuse, will run for vice president. The announcement was made on Jamie Kelso’s Stormfront radio program on Sunday.

Despite the bizarre reality that Gividen and Whitaker claim they will run separate campaigns, the ticket has already excited the racist right, in no small part because of Whitaker’s role in drafting The Mantra.

A 221-word attack on multiculturalism peppered with cries of “white genocide,” The Mantra has grown wildly popular on the racist right, with sections appearing on banners hanging from Interstate overpasses and on billboards. Even Craig Cobb, who tried to take over a small North Dakota town several years ago, painted it on his house.

Undoubtedly, that fame has helped drive AFP’s decision to pick Whitaker as a candidate.

A self-professed “genius,” Whitaker has a history in politics, though a dubious one. While he claims on his blog to have been the message man in the Reagan administration responsible for crushing communism, bringing down the Berlin Wall and saving the Hubble Space Telescope, Whitaker is closer to a hard-drinking grandfatherly Forest Gump. He once claimed to have an amphetamine habit that dropped his IQ to 100.

“I’m running for vice president because I know a lot about vice,” Whitaker said in an audio interview about his candidacy posted to his Website.

His bumbling demeanor aside, Whitaker’s intended candidacy has already generated widespread excitement in white supremacist circles, with many pledging their full support to Whitaker and his followers, who refer to themselves individually as “BUGSERS” and collectively as the “SWARM.”

“With Bob at the helm and his hardened foot soldiers willing to Work [sic], this new playing field is a great opportunity to bring our White Genocide message to new heights,” wrote a user identified as Laura on Whitaker’s website. “Coach, you’re not alone anymore, You [sic] have a whole cavalry with you now.”

And he might need it.

In his interview, Whitaker wasn’t sure if what he was doing was even legal in some states, and he told his interviewer several times that they could visit “library information services” at a local college in Columbia, S.C. to find out if it was. “Unless we want to look it up on the Kindle,” Whitaker added.

Although Whitaker and AFP both share white nationalist views, they have never worked together this closely before.

Gividen recently joined AFP’s leadership as a director. His personal website, DailyKenn.com, focuses heavily on discussing black-on-white crime, writing articles such as “Black History They Don’t Want You To Know.” In that article, Gividen states that beating black slaves in the South was “extremely uncommon,” along with a litany of revisionist history surrounding the antebellum South.

But Gividen is perfectly clear about his own racist positions. “Of course I’m pro-White. And you should also be as well.” His website includes links to videos of well-known white nationalists such as Jared Taylor and Virginia Abernathy, who was AFP’s vice presidential candidate in 2012 alongside presidential candidate, Merlin Miller, a filmmaker with a well-documented history of anti-Semitic and white supremacist views. The pair received only 2,307 votes with ballot access in Colorado, New Jersey, and Tennessee.

The Gividen-Whitaker ticket, however, marks a significant change in the profile the party is seeking to project. Gividen has fared poorly in his own campaigns, but he has some experience. Coupled with Whitaker’s proven ability to mobilize a somewhat sizeable, grassroots base, the ticket represents a disconcerting reminder of how popular the Mantra has become.

As Stormfront Radio host “TruckRoy” told “Laura” after Whitaker’s announcement, “This candidacy could be huge for the Mantra.”

White Genocide Billboard Comes Down in Alabama Town

Posted in Extremist Propaganda, White Nationalism by Don Terry on January 16, 2015 - 1:56 pm

The small city of Springville, Al., got an early Martin Luther King Jr. Day present this week.

On Wednesday, an anti-diversity billboard, apparently paid for by a group of anonymous segregationists calling themselves the White Genocide Project, was removed just five days after it went went up along I-59.

Racists Struggling to Raise Money for ‘White Genocide’ Billboard

Posted in Extremist Propaganda by Don Terry on January 12, 2015 - 3:56 pm

diversity-chasing-down-whitesA group of white separatist activists is going hood … oops … hat in hand, trying to raise money to put up a racially charged billboard in an undisclosed northern city to go along with similar sign in such southern locations as Harrison, Ark., and, more recently, Springville, Al.

The Alabama billboard, which looms above a knot of trees about 15 miles north of Birmingham on I-59, says “Diversity Means Chasing Down The Last White Person.”

The group – the so-called White Genocide Project – said on its website today that the Springville sign is “the second White Genocide billboard to go up in Alabama.” The first billboard appeared near Leeds in the spring of 2013 and repeated the white nationalist mantra, “Anti-Racist is a code word for Anti-White.”

After complaining that the media “love to call us ‘supremacist’ because it conjures up images of street gangs with swastikas tattooed on their foreheads” – the group asked for money.

“If you’re tired of tripping over your stacks of cash, how about donating to the ‘Diversity is a codeword [sic] for White Genocide’ billboard project? To get this billboard up in the Northern US they need another $3,500.”

It is unclear who is behind the group or who paid for the billboard. Robert Whitaker, the curmudgeonly segregationist who wrote the 221-word white nationalist mantra that has recently become incredibly popular, today told Hatewatch that he does not know who is responsible for putting up the Springville sign, but that he “is happy and proud” that he has had an influence on spreading the alarm about “white genocide.”

“People are afraid to say anything,” Whitaker said. “Everybody but me has to be anonymous.”

The racially charged billboard near Leeds was the idea of a member of the League of the South (LOS), a neo-Confederate group that advocates for a second Southern secession, the group’s president, Michael Hill told an Alabama radio station this fall.

“I guess even racist idiots have freedom of speech,” the mayor of Leeds, David Miller, told Hatewatch. “As soon as the sign went up, we hopped on it and condemned it.”

The sign, the mayor said, stayed up for about a month.

For anyone who might be a white genocide skeptic, the group includes a list of what it looks like, including, “Moving millions of non-White immigrants into a traditionally White countries over a period of years” and “Legally chasing down and forcing White areas to accept ‘diversity.’ This is known as ‘Forced Assimilation.”

“Society is widely aware,” the group adds, “that White people are becoming a minority in several countries, but anti-Whites don’t want us to bring an end to the policies which are turning us into a minority everywhere.”

In a statement about the new billboard, the mayor of Springville, William Isley, said that the city of about 4,000 residents has been working to promote “racial harmony for many years,” adding, “Any message which cuts against such harmony is very disturbing to the City and is inconsistent with the desires and intent of the City government.

“The City,” the mayor’s statement continued, “has no connection or control over the sign at issue and denounces the message thereon as being racially offensive.”

In Racially Troubled Arkansas City, Battle of the Billboards Reignites

Posted in Anti-Black, Extremist Propaganda, Klan by Don Terry on December 31, 2014 - 11:05 am

This time, there is no doubt who put up the latest racially charged billboard in Harrison, Ark., a nearly all-white city in the Ozarks that is struggling for its soul.

The Ku Klux Klan did it.

In the fall of 2013, a billboard went up on the edge of Harrison, repeating in big black letters against a yellow background the white nationalist mantra “Anti-Racist is a Code Word for Anti-White.”

The sign brought national media attention to the city and its history of racial hostility to African Americans. But no one claimed responsibility for the sign. The man who owned the billboard company declined to say who paid to lease the space.

The Harrison Community Task Force on Race Relations, which has been working mightily for 12 years improve race relations and the city’s reputation, put up two signs of its own: “Love your neighbor.”

In March of 2014, another racially charged billboard was added just below the yellow sign. It featured a picture of a smiling white family and read, “Beautiful Town, Beautiful People, No Wrong Exits, No Bad Neighborhoods.”

The signs stayed up until about four weeks ago when they were replaced by billboards for the local McDonald’s and a Baptist church, saying everybody was welcome.

The Task Force celebrated, figuring – hoping – that the Harrison billboard wars were finally over, “because there are so many good things and great people in Harrison to focus on,” Task Force member Layne Ragsdale told Hatewatch Tuesday.

But on Monday, a new “pro-white” billboard went up in the city in a different spot, “an even better location than the others,” Thomas Robb, the longtime leader of the Knights Party, one of the longer-lived KKK organizations in the country, chortled on the white nationalist Web forum, Stormfront.

The new sign proclaims, “It’s NOT Racist to [HEART] Your People.”

Below those words is a website address that links to KKKRadio.

Billy Roper, a former neo-Nazi-turned-Klansman, wrote on Stormfront Monday that “the Anti-White elites were celebrating the fact that the previous two billboards were removed in town.”

“Haven’t they heard,” he added, “that you can’t keep a good Klan down?”

The Knights Party, also known as the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, has long been associated with Harrison, primarily because it uses a Harrison mailing address, although its headquarters is actually 15 miles outside of the city of 13,000 residents. In his Stormfront posts about the new sign, Robb said he wanted the Task Force “to celebrate and do their Hi-Fives” about the racially charged signs coming down before hitting them with the new billboard.

“We could have put the billboards up the next day,” he smirked, “but it is more fun to allow them to be puffed up and then prick their bubble.”

He added that he is looking to put up another sign on Interstate 40 in Russellville, near Arkansas Tech. “I already have the OK from the billboard company,” Robb wrote, “but we need a little of this stuff $$. Anyone want to help?”

Ragsdale of the Task Force told Hatewatch today that when she first heard about the new billboard going up she hoped it was a joke. “But it’s real,” she sighed. “They’re still trying to smear the community with their opinions. They’re trying to pretend they’re the voice of Harrison. It just gets so old. Move on, already.”
