The first 100 days of the second Trump administration introduced Americans to an executive order barrage never before seen in our country. It is aimed primarily at cutting programs essential to the social safety net that for almost a century has provided for the people who suffer from hunger, poverty and illness.
The Southern Poverty Law Center examines how these cuts will affect people at the ground level across the Deep South in its six-part “Cuts & Consequences” series. The goal of the series is to show that cuts seen as numbers on a budget document in Washington can have real effects on the ground — like providing for a veteran living with food insecurity in Alabama, or the difference between having shelter or living out in the elements for a sexagenarian with depression and bipolar disorder in Florida.
The series also addresses the virtual elimination of Head Start and other education programs, cutbacks in Medicaid coverage and programs and the collateral damage to subsidies for farmers. It also takes a closer look at what, if anything, is gained from these cuts and where these funds will be redirected.
