Statement of SPLC President Richard Cohen on the nomination of Senator Jeff Sessions for attorney general
The following statement is from Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
"We have known Senator Sessions for many years. As the U.S. attorney in Mobile, Alabama, in the early 1980s, he was extremely helpful to us while we were representing the family of Michael Donald, a young black man who was lynched by the members of the Ku Klux Klan.
"But we cannot support his nomination to be the country’s next attorney general. Senator Sessions not only has been a leading opponent of sensible, comprehensive immigration reform, he has associated with anti-immigrant groups we consider to be deeply racist, including the Federation for American Immigration Reform and the Center for Security Policy. If our country is to move forward, we must put all forms of racism behind us."
