About 30 members of the National Socialist Movement, America's largest neo-Nazi group, marched in the nation's capital on the anniversary of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing to protest illegal immigration.
Clad in spanking new black uniforms — apparently a takeoff on the Italian fascist paramilitary "Blackshirt" formations, adopted after years of wearing faux Nazi brown-shirt apparel — the marchers waved swastika flags and shouted "Sieg Heil" as they marched to jeers down Constitution Avenue. The demonstrators were surrounded by hundreds of riot-equipped police and even helicopters, and were dogged all the way to the West Lawn of the Capitol by anti-racist counter-protesters who outnumbered them by a huge margin. But the only violence came before the march started, when several NSM members were discovered by counter-protesters and a clash ensued. Police waded in and ended up arresting six of the counter-demonstrators.
