In the spring of 2020, some alumni and students at VMI began demanding change — including the removal of the memorials glorifying the Confederacy commonly seen on school grounds. Meanwhile, an independent investigation exposed a longstanding culture of systemic racism. Now, for the first time in 182 years, a Black superintendent has been appointed to lead VMI. But will he be able to implement real change?
