Despite being occasionally conjured up as a representative of the alt-right in mainstream publications, the prolific white nationalist bloggers "Gregory Hood" and "James Kirkpatrick" have kept their identities secret for over a decade. Yet a trove of leaked emails from former Daily Caller and Breitbart staffer Katie McHugh ties both identities to Kevin DeAnna – an early leader and ideological architect of the alt-right, who worked at both the Leadership Institute and WorldNetDaily. DeAnna's decade-long career as a pseudonymous white nationalist blogger sheds new light not only on the rise of the alt-right, but also on how white nationalists seized upon conservative institutions to build their movement.
