These incidents include only a fraction of the approximately 195,000 reported and unreported hate crimes that a 2011 Bureau of Justice Statistics report estimated occurred annually between 2003 and 2009. Another burned mezuzah was found inside an apartment building next door. Ruben Ubiles, 35, was charged with 12 counts of arson as a hate crime, 12 counts of burglary as a hate crime and 12 counts of criminal mischief as a hate crime.

TENNESSEE

Todd E. Dalton, 25, and John Cory Lanier, 26, were charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of Corey Matthews, 26, around March 24. Dalton, Lanier and the victim all were allegedly members of a faction of the neo-Nazi Aryan Nations and authorities reportedly theorize that Matthews’ death was the result of a dispute over the group’s beliefs. Another reported Aryan Nations member, Coty Keith Holmes, 26, was arrested in Florida on April 16 in connection with the murder. David Gordon Jenkins, 46, who reportedly had ties to the racist prison gang Aryan Brotherhood, remains at large.
