News Roundup for September 7, 2011

Judge Jeffrey A. Manning added an 85- to 190-year prison sentence to the three death sentences Richard Poplawski received for the shooting deaths of three Pittsburgh, Pa., police officers in 2009. The extra term would keep Poplawski behind bars should his death sentences be commuted or overturned. The extra sentence was for Poplawski’s 25 non-murder convictions.

Murfreesboro, Tenn., police and the Department of Homeland Security are investigating a bomb threat received yesterday afternoon at the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. The center was a target of arson and gunshots last year. Local police say they will step up patrols in the area before and after Sept. 11.
