The sheriff of one of the wealthiest counties in the United States resigned this week in the face of impeachment threats over a hostile work environment and his racist, sexist and anti-Semitic statements.

Amid rampant dissension in the ranks, doubts about the group’s future are growing.

Charles A. Weisman, a prolific author and publisher of materials about the anti-Semitic theology known as Christian Identity, died on Oct. 8, according to an announcement made by fellow Identity minister Ted R. Weiland.
