SPLC: Supreme Court ruling a victory for racial equality
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin is by Rhonda Brownstein, Southern Poverty Law Center legal director.
“Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a major victory for racial equality on college campuses and for our nation as a whole. The Court recognized that it is in our national interest to expand opportunities to talented minority students, reduce racial isolation, promote cross-racial understanding, and prepare today’s students for our increasingly diverse workforce and society.
“We hope this ruling encourages additional sectors of our society to develop policies and practices that promote racial diversity and equality.
“The significance of this issue is why the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in November of last year supporting the University of Texas’ policy.”
