SPLC: Senate Must Block American Health Care Act
The Southern Poverty Law Center is deeply disappointed by the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of the American Health Care Act.
The solution to our nation’s health care issues is not stripping health insurance from more than 24 million people – particularly the working class and those with pre-existing conditions, who will not be able to afford insurance in the private marketplace with the meager tax credits offered by the plan.
We also won’t solve our problems by upending Medicaid – one of our nation’s most successful social welfare programs – as we give tax breaks to the wealthiest among us. Yet, that is exactly what this plan prescribes.
Quite simply, the American Health Care Act fails to uphold even the most basic American ideals of equality, compassion and caring for those in need. Instead, it rewards the rich for their wealth and blames the poor for their vulnerabilities and challenges.
We deserve better. The Senate should not consider this bill.
