SPLC statement on Fifth Circuit decision permitting anti-LGBT discrimination
We are disappointed by the decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. HB 1523 is a plain violation of our central constitutional values.
It establishes three anti-LGBT religious beliefs as official state doctrine. The law purposely targets LGBT Mississippians and puts them at risk.
None of the law's potential victims should have to wait to suffer its grave consequences in order to challenge its constitutionality.
