SPLC statement on Louisiana not bringing charges in Alton Sterling’s death
Louisiana’s decision not to bring criminal charges against Baton Rouge police officers in the death of Alton Sterling raises serious questions. The final moments of his life looked less like a police stop and more like a public execution.
Our communities must have confidence in local law enforcement. As people of color in our nation continue to be marginalized, exploited and brutalized, we must honestly examine police violence that undermines this public confidence. We must know that law enforcement values the lives of all the people they are sworn to protect and serve.
Our work to uphold the dignity of all those who interact with the criminal justice system demands nothing less.
