SPLC statement on Trump administration’s deployment of additional U.S. troops at Mexico border
The Trump administration is deploying additional U.S. troops at the southern border with Mexico in response to a caravan of migrants, according to news reports today.
The deployment of additional troops to the border is an act of defiance, does not make this country safer, and does not adhere to this country’s values as a nation of immigrants.
Migrants fleeing violence are not a threat to our national security. Individuals who are fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries have the right to present themselves to U.S. immigration authorities to seek asylum.
We will continue our fight to ensure that the Trump administration does not violate the longstanding rights of asylum seekers under U.S. and international law.
