SPLC Action Fund Joins Other Florida-Based Groups to Urge Veto of Anti-Democratic Legislation SB 1794
Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, a coalition of groups committed to defending Florida’s democratic process submitted a letter to Governor Ron DeSantis urging a veto of SB 1794, which would impose significant, new hurdles to get citizen initiatives to change the state constitution on the ballot.
The following statement on the need for Governor DeSantis to veto SB 1794 is by Nancy Abudu, deputy legal director for the SPLC Action Fund:
“In the midst of a worldwide pandemic affecting more Floridians by the day, Governor DeSantis should not be signing legislation eliminating a path for them to participate directly in the state’s democratic process. He should veto SB 1794 without delay and get back to the business of protecting the health and public safety of the people of Florida as well as the health of our democracy. It is already expensive enough to participate meaningfully in Florida’s government. Signing 1794 would add huge additional costs to citizen ballot initiatives, effectively eliminating them as a possibility for all but the most wealthy special interests and corporations in Tallahassee.”
