SPLC Action Fund on Passing of NO BAN Act in U.S. House of Representatives
WASHINGTON — SPLC Action Fund President and Chief Executive Officer Margaret Huang issued the statement below following the passing of the NO BAN Act in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 233-183. The Act is designed to end the discriminatory and racist entry bans on Muslims and Africans imposed by President Trump’s Administration. It also prohibits future presidents from discriminating based on religion in suspending or restricting entry into the United States, with exceptions to ensure protection of national security and public safety.
“We commend Members of U.S. House of Representatives for passing the NO BAN Act today, the first bill designed to protect the rights of Muslim communities in the United States. The unnecessary, cruel entry bans have dramatically affected millions of Americans, restricting their rights to travel, denying access for those who need life-saving medical treatment, and unfairly separating them from their families.
“We now urge the Senate to support this historic bill and stop the discriminatory policies of the Trump Administration. Throughout our history, prejudice and fear have led to unjust and discriminatory immigration, asylum and refugee restrictions. The enactment of the NO BAN Act will ensure that no president will be able to ban people for discriminatory purposes without accountability.”
