SPLC DENOUNCES FLORIDA LT. GOV.’S XENOPHOBIC CALL TO SEND ‘ILLEGAL’ IMMIGRANTS OUT OF FLORIDA
MIAMI — Paul R. Chávez, senior supervising attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) Immigrant Justice Project, released the following statement in response to Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, who stated that immigrants would be transported out of the state.
The statement centered on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ planned use of $12 million in federal pandemic aid for a state program to transport immigrants out of Florida. Previously, the SPLC urged the U.S. Treasury to investigate Florida’s planned xenophobic redirection of $12 million in federal pandemic aid to target immigrants.
“Hatred and xenophobia toward migrants have no place in government. Migrants and asylum seekers in Florida have fled economic hardship and political repression from Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti and many other countries. This move will harm families and children whose loved ones have managed to reunite with them in Florida.
“The state of Florida does not have the authority to remove people from the state due to their immigration status. This plan flies in the face of federal law. The SPLC will continue to advocate and build power for a multiracial and inclusive democracy that welcomes immigrants with fairness, compassion and dignity. We will continue to fight alongside our Florida communities to ensure that our state and local governments are both representative of the communities they serve and equally responsive to the needs, hopes and futures of all community members.”

MIAMI — Paul Chávez, abogado senior con el Proyecto de Justicia para Inmigrantes del Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), emitió el siguiente comunicado en respuesta a la declaración de la vicegobernadora de Florida, Jeanette Nuñez, quien afirmó que los inmigrantes serían expulsados del estado.
Dicha mención se centró en el plan del gobernador de Florida, Ron DeSantis, de utilizar hasta $12 millones de fundos federales originalmente destinados como ayuda durante la pandemia, para un programa estatal destinado a expulsar a persona inmigrantes fuera de Florida. Anteriormente, el SPLC instó al Departamento del Tesoro de los Estados Unidos a investigar la redirección xenófoba planificada de estos fondos para atacar a los inmigrantes.
“El odio y la xenofobia hacia los migrantes no tienen cabida en el gobierno.
