SPLC Joins Other Civil Rights Organizations to Protect Voting Rights
On Friday, the SPLC joined other civil rights organization with pending litigation challenging the constitutionality of Florida Senate Bill 7066 in filing a motion for preliminary injunction. If granted, the motion would prevent the enforcement of SB 7066 in Florida as court proceedings continue. The following is a statement by Nancy Abudu, deputy legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center:
"On Friday, we filed a preliminary injunction seeking to protect our clients and other Floridians in their situation from being unfairly denied access to the ballot or purged from the voter rolls. The Florida legislature enacted a modern-day poll tax that disproportionately impacts low-income people. We are challenging that law in court and look forward to a ruling that upholds the sacred right to vote for all Floridians and rejects the notion that voting is only for those who can afford it."
