SPLC Joins #StopHateforProfit Campaign
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is joining the #StopHateforProfit campaign launched earlier this month by the Anti-Defamation League, Color of Change, Common Sense Media, Free Press, the NAACP and Sleeping Giants. The campaign asks that Facebook and Instagram advertisers pause all ad spending in July 2020.
The SPLC’s President and Chief Executive Officer Margaret Huang released the following statement:
“We continue to be extremely concerned about Facebook’s handling of hateful rhetoric and lack of oversight of misleading information from extremist groups trying to sow division among the American public. They have a responsibility to stop the spread of hate among their users.
“As civil rights organizations like ours have sounded the alarm for years, we join #StopHateforProfit to demand meaningful enforcement and prevent this type of extremist content to proliferate. We want to see tangible action from Facebook and Instagram ahead of the general election and are willing to extend our boycott, which will also include all use of their platforms, until they do.”
