SPLC Response to President Trump’s Comments on Family Separation During Interview on Telemundo Notícias
The Horrors of Family Separation are far from over. They are a reality on the ground.
DECATUR, Ga. –The following is a statement by SPLC Senior Supervising Michelle LaPointe on claims made by President Trump regarding his administration’s handling of family separation during his first televised interview on Univision:
“As advocates endlessly immersed in untangling the web of tragedies created by the administration’s Zero Tolerance policy, we are appalled by the President’s cynical claim during his interview with Telemundo that he actually ‘brought families together.’
“It is the latest in his endless parade of lies on immigration. The administration lied when it said the government was not separating families. It lied about the number of families it tore apart. It lied when it said the practice has stopped. The government continues to rip children from their parents’ arms to deter them from seeking asylum in the United States. The people of this country rose up last summer to demand an end to this callous policy and must again demand that the government stop tearing apart families.
“We will continue to demand justice for those whose lives were upended by this policy and to reunify those currently separated.
