SPLC Statement on the Far-Right Shooting in Hanau, Germany
Southern Poverty Law Center’s Interim President Karen Baynes-Dunning issued the following statement on the shooting at two German bars in Hanau:
“The tragic shooting that took place in Hanau, Germany, Wednesday evening left nine people dead at two bars that have been reported to be frequented by immigrants. This attack once again shows us the globalization of far-right extremism.
“Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and everyone impacted by this horrific event. As German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated, ‘racism is a poison,’ and this latest act of violence reminds us that we must all work together to address the problem of hate and extremism, not just in our own countries, but around the world.”
